Sleep apnea is a condition in which your breathing is interrupted during sleep. It can happen repeatedly through the night, and since it deprives the brain of oxygen is a serious condition. There is effective treatment available at Redbud Dental of Edmond.
Difficulty breathing during sleep, however, does not automatically mean sleep apnea. There are medical issues that can cause it, such as allergies.
Are allergies and sleep apnea related?
Sleep apnea and allergies can both make it more difficult to breathe. Difficulty breathing, in turn, can hinder sleep. In the case of allergies, the airways are blocked by nasal congestion. With obstructive sleep apnea – the most common type – the airway is blocked by tissue at the back of the throat.
Difficulty breathing caused by allergies can be treated at home with an over-the-counter anti-allergy or anti-congestion medicine. It is important to remember that allergies are generally temporary, so any experience with blocked airways from congestion will not bring about permanent difficulties breathing. Allergies do not cause sleep apnea.
Approximately 22 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, but more than half of them are undiagnosed. At Redbud Dental of Edmond we treat sleep apnea with an oral appliance, and have helped people in Guthrie and Deer Creek. We also offer complete family dentistry.
