Also known as the third molars, wisdom teeth usually come in between the late teens and early twenties. Sometimes they grow in straight and healthy, but unfortunately that is in a small percentage of people. Most have them extracted because they can be troublesome. Problems
There are several common issues with wisdom teeth.
- Angling: Wisdom teeth often grow in at an angle, so that they lean too far inward or outward.
- Positioning: They can grow in too horizontally in the tooth socket, instead of vertically.
- Impacted: Sometimes wisdom teeth grow into the gums or the jawbone. This is known as an impacted tooth. They can become infected and be extremely painful.
We can X-ray the jaws of our younger patients to see how their wisdom teeth are coming along. When we see they are going to be a problem we usually recommend extracting them.
